ESL Teachers for September Start
Date: 2010-07-20 06:07:41, Location: Central America
We have about 1000 students in Loja and 150 in Machala and about to open Cuenca. We divide all students by age and level. Children up to 18 receive 1 hour daily and adults (18+) receive 2 hours daily Monday to Friday. The 1 hour student cycle runs for 5 months and the adult cycles 2.5 months.
We use text books which all come with English teaching guides which give step by step plans for each page and lesson so it´s pretty straight forward. Teachers will be responsible for lesson planning and marking the tests, (they are pre-written) writing report cards at the end of 5 month cycle for the children and planning the lesson. I have a teacher's guide written which you can read when you get here.
Lessons for adults are from 9-11 in the morning and 7-9 at night and children start from 3pm and go until 7pm.It’s a friendly school and most children think of it as a social gathering place, quite often there will be someone playing a guitar somewhere! There is a back garden in Loja where you can do some class work if you wish. Off site activities if unit related are acceptable. We have 2 teacher´s room with cubicles and internet. Most teachers have opted to bring their own laptop but there is a computer here set up for teacher use.
Outside Partners:
We also have contracts outside of the school with partners such as high schools, primary schools within the city, and the local university. Each case is different. Some require reinforcement of English learned within a school, some require that you be their own in-house English teacher.
Cambridge and TEFL
We have recently been approved as a Cambridge University Exam Preparation Center which we will be opening in September as well as offering TEFL certification courses. This is an additional string to our bow and will also provide additional hours of teaching
Accommodation:
With respect to accommodation here in Loja we have rented out a several apartments and a house. The cycle just finished we had around 24 teachers and are hoping for the same this time round. With respect to accommodation some rooms are for sharing and some are for single occupancy. Rent will be in the region of $70 per month+ $70 deposit. This includes your water and electricity. Gas is bought in tanks which cost $2.25 which lasts at least 1 month.
Wages:
We pay $4 per teaching hour, 1 hour per class preparation time per week. I can guarantee you 4 hours work a day Monday to Friday and Saturday rotation if you wish and more with private lessons. So on $320+ a month which is what you would make that is more than adequate to survive here. A family of 6 can comfortably survive on less than $80 a week. You can survive on $5 a day comfortably if you want to eat out every day. Some teachers go to a local restaurant for a $1.45 lunch.
Health Care:
We don’t provide personal health insurance but can arrange a $18 a month contract but it is valid for a year. Most teachers normally come out with their own.
Ecuador:
Ecuador is a beautiful country and Loja the extremely safe city, the safest I have been told in Latin America, with very friendly people. It is a small city with around 150k inhabitants. It is not a country to come to if you want to make money though, I want to reinforce that. You can adequately survive here as long as you are sensible. Alcohol is cheap a litre beer is around $1-$1.50.
Start Date and Visas:
Loja classes start in September. We can arrange work visas when you arrive.
