GENERAL NATURE OF POSITION:
San Jose State University (SJSU) College of International and Extended Studies invites qualified candidates to submit applications for the position of Director for International Gateways (IG). Reporting to the Dean of the College of International and Extended Education, the Director plans, coordinates and administers diverse English as a Second Language (ESL) programs, supervises academic and operations personnel, interfaces with campus units regarding student support services and assists with program marketing and recruitment. International Gateways is a completely self-supporting program within CIES. It has an annual enrollment of more than 600 students, representing 23 countries. This position offers the successful candidate an opportunity to develop an already strong program into a model of innovative international education. The position offers scope for creative program development and expansion of international programs with business, government, and industry in the Silicon Valley and abroad. Two programs make up the IG unit: Studies in American Language This division of IG is a year-round, intensive English language program for international students planning to attend an American college or university and others who wish to improve their English skills for professional or personal reasons. Courses include: ♦ Academic and Test Preparation ♦ Active Communication in English International University Studies This program provides specialized intensive language and content-based instruction for international student or professional groups. Semester programs expand the SJSU opportunities for non-degree international students. MBA Preparation helps students enhance the skills necessary to succeed in the MBA and other graduate business programs in the US. Customized programs are designed to meet the pedagogical and scheduling needs of each group. ♦ Semester @ SJSU ♦ Special Group Contract Programs ♦ MBA Preparation ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Administration and Development Provide leadership in the development, implementation, and evaluation of quality ESL courses, student activities, and programs Develop program contingencies or alternatives to anticipate ever-changing international market Manage contracts for custom programs Develop and implement plans to recruit and retain international students Manage change and optimize fiscal and human resources in a client oriented, self-support organization Maintain strong links to SJSU Enrollment Services to assure smooth operation of Conditional Eligibility Assume responsibilities for exploring and writing grant proposals and other funding projects as assigned Develop and maintain contact with other ESL program directors to monitor the market and competitive environment Collaborate with other SJSU College/Department administrators to establish joint programs and partnerships Serve as representative and participate in the activities of selected organizations as assigned by the Dean of CIES Oversee support services for students (immigration assistance, housing, registration, testing, etc.) Perform all other duties that may be required for this position Personnel Provide leadership and motivation for faculty and staff growth and development Oversee the hiring and retention of faculty Direct faculty assignments (classroom, curriculum development, overseas representation) Train, supervise, observe and evaluate faculty and staff Conduct instructor and staff meetings on a regular basis and as needed Coordinate professional development of instructors and administrative staff Budget Generate and manage resources with particular skill in containing costs and enhancing revenue Develop and justify budgets for ongoing and new programs Monitor budgets, maintaining balance between fiscal control and program quality Prepare and maintain fiscal records and submit term and annual financial reports to the Dean of CIES on income, expenditures and financial status of IG Marketing and Public Relations Research market demands Oversee social media and website presence Develop, nurture and maintain reciprocally positive relations within CIES and with SJSU faculty and administrative units Develop and maintain academic, community, business, industry and government ties, as appropriate, to promote IG programs and services for both international and local clients Market and recruit for IG programs as required ________________________________________________________________________ INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS: A core component of this position is the establishment of effective working relationships with all campus and community entities. A high presence is required as well as positive interactions with: Campus administration Program faculty, staff, students International partners Vendors and local community agencies ________________________________________________________________________ NOTES: Additional Salary Information: Commensurate with experience + Excellent Benefits Requirements SKILLS: Demonstrated high degree of creative talent and energy Ability to deal positively with the ever-changing international market Proficiency in preparing budgets and managing fiscal resources Demonstrated ability to work with senior level administrators to effect change Ability to employ an entrepreneurial approach to providing innovative educational programs Excellent leadership, collaborative and communication skills with a commitment to quality service Sensitivity to diverse customs and cultures and ability to deal effectively with a wide range foreign dignitaries and sponsors QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: Masters degree from an accredited institution in Linguistics, TESOL, or closely related field. Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in higher education administration (preferably in an Intensive English Program) Practical knowledge of and experience in current issues in the management operation of self-support programs. Demonstrated record of successful program growth and development. Highly developed interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a diverse population of managers, ESL instructors, university personnel, office staff and international students. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Previous teaching, travel, study/residence abroad preferred. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: In carrying out the above duties, the Director must be willing to work irregular hours, including weekends and evenings, and to travel locally and abroad as required.
