In cooperation with KEI Advanced, a division of Kawaijuku Group, the UCLA Extension Tokyo Center seeks a full-time business English instructor for the Business English Communication Program (BEC). The UCLA Extension American Language Center (ALC) oversees the academic aspects of the program, e.g., curriculum, instructor selection and supervision, and ensures that BEC meets UCLA Extension quality standards. Reporting to the Business English Communication (BEC) program principal instructor, the full-time instructor will be responsible for teaching BEC courses at the Tokyo Center as well as at off-site corporate/institutional client locations. The position involves a one-year renewable contract with KEI Advanced. With many years of BEC teaching experience, the principal instructor will be the onsite supervisor for academic aspects of the program and reports to the UCLA Extension ALC program coordinator who maintains close, regular contact with the program. The program coordinator and the ALC director make periodic visits to Tokyo Center to observe classes, meet with instructors, and consult with KEI Advanced staff.
Additional Salary Information: The compensation package ranges from 6,000,000 Yen to 7,000,000 Yen (at current exchange rates, about $72,000 to $84,000), depending on experience, ability, and other factors, and includes base salary, a stipend toward rent, paid utilities, and 50% Japanese National Health Insurance and National Pension coverage (according to Japanese Labor Law). Other Benefits: Six weeks paid holidays per year as stipulated by UCLA Extension, Round trip transportation (economy class) to Japan if not already living in Japan, 100% coverage of commuter transportation to and from work, Professional Development support, Work visa sponsorship if needed.
M.A. in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or closely related field,
Business degree(s) and/or significant, demonstrated experience in business,
3 years English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching experience in adult and university-level programs,
Demonstrated knowledge of language teaching methodology, approaches, and techniques,
Versatility and flexibility in teaching language skills to students at different proficiency levels,
Excellent writing and communication skills,
Experience living in Japan, proficiency in Japanese, familiarity with/sensitivity to Japanese culture in general and to Japanese business culture in particular
Familiarity with standard language proficiency exams, TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, etc.,
Active involvement in professional organizations, e.g., JALT, TESOL, etc.,
Experience and demonstrated proficiency in distance learning/online learning and instruction,
Proficiency with computers and computer software, e.g., PowerPoint, Excel, etc..
