About Hainan Foreign Language College for Professional Education:
Located in the city of Wenchang on the northeastern coast of China's tropical Hainan island, the Hainan Foreign Language College for Professional Education attracts Chinese students from all over China. International students from the United States, Japan, and other parts of Asia also attend classes in Chinese.
Founded in 1947, this language training vocational college offers courses in Chinese, English, Russian, Japanese, Korean, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and German.
Wenchang county has many special beaches and scenic sites, and is just 20 minutes to Meilan International Airport by fast train. By train, it is just 25 minutes to the capital city of Haikou in the north, with the mega-beach resort city of Sanya just 90 minutes away to the south. Cruises to Vietnam across the Gulf of Tonkin, world yachting regattas, high-fashion events, and surfing competitions are transforming Hainan.
Wenchang's students want to work within this excitement as translators, hospitality staff, managers, and entrepreneurs. Wenchang county is also constructing a large satellite and space facility as China's "Cape Canaveral," and the college is expected to see additional student growth from this in the coming years.
About Hainan Inter Foreign Language School (interEd):
Chinese education entrepreneur Judy Xu launched her Hainan Inter Foreign Language School (interEd) more than 20-years ago. Based in Hainan's bustling capital city of Haikou, they mainly cater to kindergarten, primary, and high school students. It has adult corporate clients and trains hospitality workers too. With small classes and multimedia training facilities, interEd is expanding across Hainan island, with a new centre down the coast in the city of Qionghai, as well as one planned for Wenchang. The staff are tremendously friendly. The kids are fun loving and enjoy learning.
The main centre is right in the heart of downtown Haikou near scores of shops, restaurants, charming canals, and traditional Chinese parks.
About the Programmes:
Ideal candidates for these language exchange and cultural training immersion programmes should be passionate about harmonious international interaction and a commitment to understanding Chinese culture and education.
There are two options: the college and the private centre.
The College Option:
The college option works on two levels: candidates teach and study. Candidates teach oral English 16 hours per week to Chinese college students. Each class averages one hour, with an average of 20 students. Weekends are off.
The rest of the time candidates study in private Chinese language courses tailored to their needs and levels, attend bi-monthly Chinese culture seminars, and go on monthly field trips to Hainan ethnic minority villages, local beaches, mountains, and cities of Haikou and Sanya.
Accepted candidates will be provided with their own free of charge apartment on campus, a Chinese working visa, and a monthly stipend of about US$ 700--which goes a very long way in a small city like Wenchang! Candidates who stay for the full contract will be reimbursed RMB 8,000 (about US$ 1,200)--which can be used to offset the plane ticket costs to Hainan.
The candidates will be given teacher orientation training sessions and constant mentorship in both teaching skills for Chinese college students and Hainan living skills as an expatriate. Each candidate will have one foreign mentor and one Chinese mentor.
This exciting programme is perfect for recent graduates or graduate students studying education, linguistics, the social sciences, or the humanities. It also warmly welcomes education professionals who want to train, travel, and take a sabbatical in the Chinese tropics all at the same time.
The Private Centre Option:
Like the college option, the Private Centre Option works on two levels: a combination of teaching and studying.
This package, however, is focused on the teaching skills needed to instruct Chinese kindergarten, primary, and high school students. Teaching to Chinese children is a boom industry and where major money is made in the current Chinese education market. There is a high demand across the country for teachers with this skill set, and candidates can learn superb techniques to enter and profit from this dynamic market.
The work-load is 16 preparation and teaching hours per week for a monthly salary of RMB 6,000, (about US$ 800). Candidates are given a free apartment near the school in downtown Haikou, a Chinese working visa, and travel reimbursement package.
The teaching time is more fluid than the college schedule as classes mostly takes place on the weekends. Given sales demand, the schedules change during the week, but the majority of the week is open and free for personal time.
Management is flexible to arrange tailored instruction times with teachers. Candidates in this programme will be given private Chinese lessons based on their personal needs and goals. They will also attend bi-monthly Chinese culture seminars, and go on monthly field trips to Hainan ethnic minority villages, local beaches, and mountains. They'll be given personalized tours of Haikou and Sanya cities.
