Consulting Opportunities Available in Baghdad, Iraq

The Academy for Educational Development (AED) is working with the US Embassy in Baghdad to implement two programs as part of an intensive effort to improve the English language competency and teaching skills of Baghdad university faculty and students. To achieve this, AED will train university teachers in modern TEFL/TESL methods through a series of intensive one month long workshops between March, 2010 and July, 2010, will teach undergraduate literature and linguistics courses while professors are in training, and will establish a state of the art English Language Resource Center at two campuses.
AED seeks a number of consultants for the two University of Baghdad ESL Initiative programs. The consulting period ranges from 1-4 months depending on interest and availability.
POSITIONS:
SENIOR CONSULTANTS (2 positions): Senior Consultants will deliver ESL pedagogy and methods training sessions to small groups of university professors using a curriculum designed by AED and will advise on the set up of an English Resource Center.
ESL TRAINING (several positions): ESL Trainers will teach undergraduate courses in either linguistics or literature while the university professors are attending the ESL pedagogy and methods workshops. ESL Trainers will deliver existing university of Baghdad curriculum to university undergraduates using a learner-centered and communicative approach and will assist with the set up of an English Resource Center.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Senior Consultants must have:
• a PhD in TEFL/TESOL or Linguistics (or equivalent)
• a minimum of five years teaching ESL at the college/university level
• at least 3 years of experience teaching or training graduate students in a MA TEFL/TESOL degree program or in a TEFL certification program
• overseas teaching experience
ESL Trainers must have:
• a Master’s degree in English, TEFL/TESOL, or Linguistics (or working towards a Master’s degree)
• at least 3 years of experience teaching ESL, English Literature, or Linguistics to adults in the US or overseas
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
• Consultants will be paid a competitive daily rate with an additional 35% rate for danger pay
• AED will provide secure lodging (within the green zone), all meals, secure transportation to the training site, and enrollment in ISOS medical evacuation plan
