Founded in 1942, Zamorano is a private, non-profit international university specialized in higher education in the fields of agricultural production, sustainable management of natural resources and the environment, rural development to reduce poverty, adding value through agro-industrialization and improvement of global agribusiness competitiveness. The University is located 33 kilometers southeast of the capital city of Tegucigalpa, in the Yeguare Valley of Honduras, and is registered in the United States as a non-profit corporation. In Honduras, Zamorano has the status of an International Mission and is recognized by the Honduran Council of Higher Education.
Zamorano offers four undergraduate degrees in agricultural engineering: Agribusiness Management; Food Science and Technology; Agricultural Sciences and Production; and Environment and Development. The four-year educational program emphasizes academic excellence and character formation, and it complements theory with practical field experience through its Learning-by-Doing program, in which the students work half a day in the production and processing plants or conserving the natural resources that are part of the university campus.
Zamorano is governed by a Board of Trustees of different nationalities, who are leaders in business, education or civic affairs. The university President reports to the Board of Trustees. The alumni (better known as "Zamoranos") are enthusiastic supporters of their alma mater, and are recognized for their leadership roles in production, development, entrepreneurship, academia, government, and cross-sector engagement.
Zamorano is a co-educational residential campus, with 1,283 students, 67% men and 33% women. The student body represents 22 countries, which includes 29% from Ecuador, 25% from Honduras, 14% from Guatemala and 8% from El Salvador; followed by Nicaragua with 5%, Panamá with 4%, smaller numbers from Bolivia, Colombia, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Belize, and Costa Rica, and even smaller percentages (2%) from Haiti, Mexico, Paraguay, Venezuela, the United States, Chile, Spain, Italy, Germany and South Korea. Zamorano is a non-profit university; approximately 65% of our students receive partial or full scholarships, while 35% cover the cost with personal funds.
Zamorano is situated on 10,000 acres, which include the central campus, agricultural land, and forests in two watersheds, one of which is a biological reserve. All students and approximately 100 professors, instructors, staff members and their families live on campus. Dean of Academic Affairs
The Dean of Academic Affairs oversees Zamorano´s academic environment, promoting excellence in teaching, research, and public engagement, aligned with the Institution´s mission and vision. The Dean supervises curriculum, instruction, research, finance and student affairs to ensure the academic, professional, and personal development of students, faculty, and staff. The Dean of Academic Affairs reports directly to the President.
Positions that report directly to the Dean of Academic Affairs include the five department directors: General Curriculum, Agribusiness Management, Food Science and Technology, Agricultural Sciences and Production, and Environment and Development. Other positions that report to the Dean of Academic Affairs include the Associate Dean of Students and heads of the seven offices which provide academic and student services. Each academic department also manages learning and production units, laboratories, and other modules, which implement the Learning-by-Doing program, Zamorano's intensive methodology for complementing theoretical learning in the classrooms with practical field experience.
The Dean of Academic Affairs is responsible for promoting and overseeing significant academic changes in the near future. He/she will supervise the implementation of a new General Education curriculum, Learning-by-Doing reform, new institutional mission and vision, updated plans of study for majors, and new majors or programs. The principal challenges of the position will involve leading the academic and student affairs of the campus in directions that fulfill the Institution´s mission, 2017-2021 strategic objectives, and 2030 vision. The Dean of Academic Affairs plays a key role in ensuring that Zamorano continues to be recognized as one of the most competitive agricultural universities in the region.
Lead the process of defining and implementing academic strategic goals and objectives aligned with the Institution's mission and vision, in coordination with the President, Institutional Effectiveness Director, and other stakeholders.
Ensure academic excellence through quality management processes which include curriculum alignment, faculty development, instructional innovation, accreditation, and on-going improvement processes.
Provide leadership for the quality of student life, in conjunction with the Associate Dean of Students, the Educational Administration Office, and the Counseling and Students' Affairs Offices, to ensure that students acquire relevant life skills and knowledge.
Oversee Admissions, Financial Aid, Office of the Registrar, and Library Services.
Coordinate with Admissions, Registrar, and Institutional Advancement to meet enrollment and financial aid targets.
Promote a campus culture of inquiry and research integrity.
Foster the development of academic personnel in coordination with the Human Resources Office and Educational Administration Office.
Participate in the management of human, physical, and financial resources, in coordination with the Finance Director, the Human Resources Director, and the Physical Plant and Services Director.
Cultivate external relations to promote the Institution´s image, alumni relations, outreach, and fundraising efforts, in coordination with the Institutional Advancement Office.
Ensure compliance with local and regional educational regulations and accreditation requirements.
Establish a balance of faculty responsibility in instruction, engagement, research and production, and monitor the quality of these initiatives.
Coordinate strategies and actions with the Financial, Human Resources, Institutional Advancement, Physical Plant, and Institutional Effectiveness Offices.
Lead the Academic Directors' Team and the Academic Council.
Collaborate with the Executive Council, Board of Trustees, and President.
A PhD or comparable professional degree in areas related to education and higher education administration, with relevant agricultural or development experience such as agronomy, agricultural sciences, food technology, natural resources and/or environmental management, agricultural economics and/or agribusiness management.
At least 10 years of experience in activities related to teaching, research, and administration at the university level, managing international development programs or managing companies in the agricultural sector.
A minimum of 5 years of experience in higher education administration, leadership, and teaching preferred.
Evidence of increasing responsibility over time of academic leadership and management.
Commitment and ability to embrace Zamorano's mission, vision and values.
Broad understanding of and passion for the agricultural disciplines and international development.
Experience in leading change and fostering a sense of shared purpose and positive attitudes across units and offices.
Knowledge of curriculum and assessment of student learning.
Managerial skills, teamwork, and experience in financial management of higher education.
Ability to set priorities in a climate of finite resources.
Willingness to live on the Zamorano campus, located in a rural setting.
A strong work ethic.
Mastery of both Spanish and English, with experience working in a multicultural environment, preferably in Central or South America, for at least 5 years.
