Director, English Language Program

Yachay Tech University – Urcuquí Ecuador

The Universidad de Investigacíon de Tecnología Experimental (“Yachay Tech University”) in Imbabura Province, Ecuador seeks a visionary Program Director for its English Language Program (ELP).

Yachay Tech (http://yachaytech.edu.ec/) is a new university formed in 2014 as part of Ecuador’s re-investment in and re-design of higher education. As a new institution, the environment is energetic and dynamic, requiring the ELP Director to demonstrate a compelling vision for the foundational years of a vibrant program. The ELP is a six-level university preparatory program designed to provide students with the necessary skills for study at an English-medium institution. The program also provides language instruction to university faculty and staff as well as the local communities.

The Director will interact primarily with ELP staff, providing operational management of the program for successful instruction. The Director should be a cultivator of academic excellence and motivated toward ensuring continuous improvement of ELP curriculum and goals. The position requires supervisory feedback and professional development of ELP instructors as well as the hiring and training of new faculty. The position is primarily administrative, but the environment offers abundant opportunities for research, which is encouraged by the university.

The Director is expected to work collaboratively with various academic departments and in accordance with institutional guidelines and the legal requirements of higher education in Ecuador. The ELP is a semi-autonomous unit of the university; the Director reports directly to the Chancellor and the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following:

A PhD in Applied Linguistics, TESOL, Foreign Language Pedagogy, or a related field (preferred); or, an MA in these areas with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in language program administration
Higher education teaching experience in an intensive English program or an academic English preparation program
Evidence of on-going professional development
Experience with computer-based methodologies (CALL)
Familiarity with language program assessment and development
A strong command of English
Familiarity with Spanish and/or Latin American culture is preferred
Outstanding professional, intercultural communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to supervise and manage a team of 25+ teachers as well as an ability to work effectively and collaboratively as a member of a team
Experience with managing and diffusing difficult situations with students
Ability to provide curricular and pedagogical guidance to ELP faculty
Knowledge of current best practices in language pedagogy and curriculum development
Experience with community-based language and/or short-term language programs (preferred)
Experience with course management software
Strong word processing and data management skills

Individuals of all races, gender, nationality and language backgrounds are encouraged to apply. For successful non-Ecuadorian applicants, the position requires the purchase a 5-year professional visa. The professional visa requires (depending on passport-issuing country) federal and local background checks, verification of degree, and a valid passport, among other items. This is a full-time twelve-month academic professional position with an automatically renewing contract. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Start date is negotiable, although a start date before January 2017 is preferred. Review of applications begins immediately and continues until the position is filled.

To apply, please send the following items as a single file to Ms. Norma Cecilia Benavides Moreno, Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, at nbenavides@yachaytech.edu.ec: Cover letter (maximum of 2 pages), CV, unofficial transcripts, and the names and contact information of three references (no letters please!).
