English Instructor Available for Middle East or East Asia
I am a TESOL (Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages) professional with over 18 years of experience, both in the United States and abroad. I am a native speaker of standard North American English.
I have an MA in English-Applied English Linguistics, an advanced, 2-year TESOL degree from a ’big 10’ state university in the USA (the University of Wisconsin). I also have a BA degree in Comparative Literature and Russian. I have taught courses in English as a Second Language (all skills, such as academic reading, academic writing, business writing, English for Academic Purposes or EAP, advanced grammar, phonetics, conversation, presentation skills, etc.), American Literature, and linguistics. I was also a student both in a language-intensive program (i.e. third-year Russian) and in a year-long exchange program in Kiev, Ukraine, so I understand the challenges many international and second-language students face in language and academic writing programs. While working in the ESL Institute of the University of Wisconsin, I advised undergraduates who planned on teaching overseas on selecting countries and opportunities in addition to advising international students studying English for undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral programs.
I just finished working in the Royal Saudi Air Force. I originally taught DLI (i.e. Defense Language Institute, US Air Force ESL or Foreign Language curriculum) to Saudi Intelligence Officers, and then later taught Saudi teachers of English (both commissioned and non-commissioned officers working as English teachers) on modern teaching methods. I decided to end this contract in the summer due to the worsening security situation here (i.e. Houthi missile attacks on the capital, Riyadh). However, I have included a strong letter of reference from my supervisor and included his contact information in my CV, as they agreed I had ‘good cause’ to terminate the contract. I also finished working in KSA with IGIT in Al Khobar at a DLI program with the Royal Saudi Navy, a company I worked with for over four years. This was a daily, six-hour language intensive with daily computer labs and bi-weekly testing. I have also included letters of reference (including my ‘teacher of the year’ certificate) and contact information for my supervisor. Before that, I worked at universities and private language institutes in the USA, China, South Korea, Hungary, and Ukraine. I have learned to live in and adapt to radically different cultures from my own without any significant issues.
In addition to teacher training, I have also been an academic coordinator, in charge of managing a small team of teachers, at EF English First, YBM in South Korea, and with IGIT in Saudi Arabia.
In my 18 years of teaching, in addition to ESL, I have also taught test preparation, such as IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, SPEAK, ACT, GRE, etc, English & American Literature, European Literature, General Linguistics, and Humanities. I also enjoyed teaching American Literature and the History of American Literature for two years at Beijing Aeronautics and Astronautics University.
